"It is true that men are saved by God’s grace through faith in Christ; but it is equally true that God’s grace in a man’s life inevitably results in obedience" [D A Carlson]

God is faithful

in Knowing God

Unfaithfulness is the source of much misery and heartache in this world. People being unfaithful in personal or business relationships can cause marriages to break up, families to be torn apart and businesses to become bankrupt.

Why are people unfaithful? Marriage is probably the most obvious example of the hurt is can cause. I remember my feelings of amazement on our wedding day many years ago, as I saw my young bride walk down the aisle towards me. Her beauty was radiating from her, and even beneath the veil her smile lit up the whole church. And this smile was directed totally at me. It required a conscious effort on my part to remain standing! Our exchange of vows included a heartfelt promise to be faithful, to be together through good times and bad, in sickness and health.

I’m sure I am not the only man who has stood at the front of a church and experienced those or very similar feelings towards his bride. I am not the only man who has made those promises with the greatest sincerity. Yet we only need to look at the divorce rate to know that many of those sincere and heart-felt promises are broken. Each divorce betrays that at least one of the couple did not remain true to their original commitment.

How does that initial love and commitment reduce to a broken promise?

They change.

This change may be driven by desire for someone else, a weakness, or even boredom. It may be that the change is driven by fear; the fear of getting old, the fear of having made a wrong choice. It could even be something external, such as financial pressures, which act as the prompt or motivation to break that original commitment of faithfulness. Finally it could be due to increased knowledge; they discover something new about their spouse that leads them to break the commitment.

Thankfully, the faithfulness of God is a completely different entity to the flawed examples of faithfulness we see in people around us.

Because God never changes (See posting on “God does not change”).

Since God cannot and does not change, it is also not possible for Him to be unfaithful, since that would require change.

God’s faithfulness is proclaimed and praised throughout the Bible.

Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands. (Deuteronomy 7:9)

Praise be to the LORD, who has given rest to his people Israel just as he promised. Not one word has failed of all the good promises he gave through his servant Moses. (1 Kings 8:56)

Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. (Psalms 36:5)

God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful. (1 Corinthians 1:9)

Since God is perfect, God’s faithfulness is always perfect. This perfection of God’s faithfulness is much greater than the one that I can demonstrate to my children. Although I love my children immensely, and they know they are a very big priority in my life, I need to be honest and say that sometimes my busyness, tiredness or pre-occupation with other things mean that I don’t give them the time and attention they are requesting. This is not the case with God.

While our unfaithfulness could be prompted by the influences, the attractions, of someone else, God cannot be influenced by others. He imitates nobody. There is no one like God. [See “the Mystery of God”].

Equally, nothing can force God to act out of character. For God to be forced to do something He doesn’t want to, then that something of someone must be greater than God.

God’s faithfulness to you will never change because He finds out something new about you. He knew you from the very beginning, he formed you. He already knows what you are going to do.

“ I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” (Psalms 139:14-16)

God’s faithfulness also means that He is true to his word, He means what He says. We read earlier that because of God’s great love He has given us an invitation to come into His presence. His patience means that His arms are extended to us for a long time. Yet God has also promised that there will come a time when He will banish forever those people who do not accept His invitation. Those who reject His Son Jesus Christ. While the faithfulness of God is a great comfort to those who worship and love God, it is also a severe warning to those who continually reject Him.

“I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God. But he who disowns me before men will be disowned before the angels of God.” (Luke 12:8-9)

Yet it is because of God’s faithfulness that we can accept His invitation with complete confidence. His invitation to know Him is real. His promises will always stand. His faithfulness means that we can trust Him and His promises to us completely.

A few years ago our family set off on a four-week camping trip down to Sydney. We are not usually the most adventurous when choosing our holiday destinations – our favourite camping place is a mere thirty minutes north of where we live. So, in our minds, this camping trip was more of an expedition […]
